You can buy an oak shelf from a chain store, an online shop, a marketplace or Etsy. Prices vary several-fold and the photos often look alike. Here is what to check before buying an oak shelf – especially when you need a specific size.
1. Solid wood or veneer?
This is the biggest difference. A solid oak shelf is real wood through its full thickness (one board or glued boards). Cheaper shelves are often MDF or chipboard covered with a thin oak veneer or printed foil. They look fine in photos, but cope worse with moisture and edge damage, and can't be refreshed by sanding. Look for "solid wood" in the description – "oak" alone doesn't always mean solid oak.
2. Board thickness
Thickness affects stiffness and how substantial the shelf looks. For lengths over a metre, boards around 4 cm thick are a good choice. Viperys oak shelves are 4 cm thick in every length.
3. Fixings and wall type
Check whether fixings are included and which walls they suit:
- Concealed fixing (floating shelf) – the "growing out of the wall" look, but it needs a solid wall (brick, concrete, timber studs).
- Metal brackets – also suit plasterboard (with the right plugs) and usually carry more weight.
At Viperys concealed brackets come with every floating shelf and the holes are pre-drilled. Load capacity is up to around 35 kg on a solid wall. Shelves on metal brackets hold up to around 50 kg.
4. Size: truly made to measure?
"Made to measure" means different things. Ask in what steps you can choose the length and whether other depths are possible. Our oak shelves come in lengths of 40–180 cm in 10 cm steps and depths of 15, 20, 25 or 30 cm. Other sizes are made to order on request. See How to choose shelf depth and length.
5. Finish
Oak is usually finished with oil or lacquer. Oil brings out the grain with a natural matt look, and small scratches are easy to refresh. Our oak shelves are brushed (to bring out the grain) and finished with natural oil.
6. Lead time, delivery and returns
Made-to-order shelves usually take a few days. Check the delivery cost too (long shelves can be expensive to ship) and the returns policy. At Viperys making takes 3–5 working days, EU delivery is free (2–5 days), and standard sizes can be returned within 30 days.
7. Customer reviews and photos
Product photos show a shelf in perfect conditions. Customer reviews tell you more about wood quality, packaging and service. Viperys has over 1,800 reviews on Etsy with an average of 4.9/5.
